For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. Psalm 35.7 (NRSV)
It is my great hope that when people read that so and so took a plea deal, a majority of Americans will not assume true guilt, but rather that the crushing power of the gov’t has once again compelled another poor schnook to conclude that the cost, real and potential, of equal protection under the law was, in his case, unaffordable.
If I may prognosticate, it seems this hope of mine is coming to fruition with every passing day, as congress digs deeper into the mess created by the DOJ & the FBI.
I have recently reread Howard Root’s magnificent book, Cardiac Arrest. He, like me, was haunted by the elusive answer to the question, “How did this REALLY get started, and why?” He, unlike me, found proof that the case against him was custom-ordered by those near the top of the DOJ, with the knowledge and approval of those at the very top.
I am still in the dark.
In my case it was stated by the gov’t that the charges did not arise from problems discovered by my customer, the gov’t, but rather by a “whistle-blower”, and more specifically, a disgruntled competitor. This was said by an gov’t investigative agent in the U.S. Atty’s office. The image these few words created in my mind was significantly altered when, shortly thereafter, a big piece of the evidence against me was seen by the agent to be bogus. I seized the moment to ask him to explain the matter of the “whistleblower” to me. He said that this company was in their cross-hairs, and they gave the gov’t my company’s name, to “help” themselves.
After turning down their many plea deals, and nearing the trial, we asked the prosecutor for the name of the whistleblower. The reply we received was, “There was NO whistleblower.”
And so, my contribution to this 4th of July celebration is- celebrate your country, but always be highly suspicious of your gov’t.
P.S. Not sure what to make of this (though I’m not without certain thoughts) but it is the observation of a few of us that there is an inordinate percentage (relative to the general population) of veterans in here. Among us are a Navy fighter pilot, an Army Lt. Colonel, and a USAFA grad who reached Captain. Mr. BCC got out of the USAF at E-4; he tweren’t no stinkin’ officer.
If you read Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago, you know that he and thousands of others were arrested by the rear echelon after returning from defeating the Nazi’s. I regard 80% of the federal gov’t as “rear echelon”.
And that’s MY July 4th rant!
